MARBLE STATUE
1982 - 1997
Belgium
Carving a marble statue had always been a lifelong aspiration for Piet. Thanks to the support of Baroness Cécile Vlerick, he was able to turn this dream into a reality. Unlike painting or drawing, which involve adding substances to a medium, the process of carving involves removing material from the marble to shape the sculpture. Without extensive study or preparations, Piet undertook the challenge, skillfully carving the statue, incorporating intricate elements such as hands and a sphere.
These marble works played a vital role in his artistic development and contributed to the underlying philosophy that guided his future sculptures in various materials. The experience deepened his understanding of the sculptural process, shaping his approach and leaving an indelible impact on his creative journey.
